Hi there.
Sorry to hear about your loss and in consequence your fear.
But learning to drive a stick would be naturally harder than an auto, however it has its advantages, you get better control over your vehicle with lower fuel consumption. The drawback is the troublesome shifting, especially during traffic jams.
Well, maybe i could share a personal experience, i am a military truck driver, and yes, the first time i drove, i stalled my vehicle like 8 times, it was a normal Rover, a resemblence would be the humvee that the US uses.
After that the vehicles we used just got bigger and bigger.
Well, for your case, i would say say, that, the only way to let go of your fears is to face it, be honest, be brave, just tell your instructor your fears, and if possible, pay to stick with one instructor, he will understand you and help you better.
Honestly, the only fears that i foresee that may come out of you is your emotional, mentally, learning to drive is tough, but once you get the hang of it, you'll flow easily.
And errr, contrary, i still think its best that you start with the hardest (I mean, thats the way i was trained). We start with some light traffic roads, and once i got comfortable with the vehilce, we jump the gun, and go straight down to town trafic, peak hour traffic, rush hour traffic, as that's the only way to build up confidence in your driving. That could take as quick as 2-3 lessons practical road driving.
Well, driving if you want to put in artistically, its an art, a form of self control, and vehicluar control, you have to relax and yet be alert, give and take on the road, thats the way to prevent accidents, its might be a teeny weenie bit tougher for you to learn to drive, but i think you'll do just fine. Half the earth's population can drive, what makes you so special to "gonna be too hard" to drive =D
So, relax, all the best, God bless, and hope to see you on the road. =D

It depends on who your teacher is. It's hard to know who a good driver is before you learn. I myself didn't get my license until I was about 20, so I started late too.
If you can afford it, go to driving school.
At first it's scary because you think you're going to hit something, but like anything else it just takes experience. I'm actually a better driver than most of the people in my family because I drive defensively, and I'm very aware of my surroundings, but you wouldn't have guessed it when I started because I was so nervous. But driving really isn't hard. It just depends on how you look at it. It might be more difficult for you because you seem to have a lot of anxiety attached to it. So it will be difficult for a while, but after a month or two of being out on the road alone you'll relax a little. Just take it easy and dont' force yourself into uncomfortable situations and avoid the freeway until you feel you're ready. Good luck.

Learning to control a large vehicle is scary at first. It becomes easier with practice and time.
I am sorry your Dad died in a car accident, I can understand your reluctance.
However, with that respect for what a car can do, will most likely make you a safer driver.
Do you have someone you feel comfortable with to teach you to drive? You will need to pass the written examination in your state to get a learners permit to drive. If you fail to do this, and are caught, it will mean suspension of your driving privilege for a time. Even if you dont have a license yet.
Find out from your state what is required to obtain a driver license, and go for it.

fear weighs you down, find someone you know with a car that knows your situation and tell them you want to learn, find an empty parking lot and have them walk you through it, no need to drive on a road or near other cars, just relax and have fun while driving, make sure your loss of your father is not on your mind at all... it also helps to not have music the first time, or someone who will make you uncomfortalble or make u feel like you did something wrong when driving.
try that and then see if you still want to drive or not, just take small steps and dont feel rushed or pushed into anything
hope everything goes well for you

I don't think it will be that hard. Find a place that is VERY spacey. A big empty parking lot would be my first suggestion. When I learned how to drive, my instructor took me out on the highway! MAN was I scared. Going 50mph and I thought I was flying. After awhile, it got easier and easier. He took us mostly on rarely used back roads, parking lots, and usually it was very early in the morning. Take your time and remember to relax. That is a HUGE thing.
Good luck!

actually it is really easy to do,,first off,,never bee afraid of a car,,if you are ,,you will always be uncertain of what it feels like to make a mistake,,we all make them,,you just need to build your confidence up,,and get a learners permit,,and start driving with someone,,pick someone who is calm,,and don't yell at you if you make a mistake,,once you gain confidence in your self,,you will feel a lot safer driving a car,,i know i was scared to death the first time i ever drove,,i bet if we all would admit it,,we all was,,but once you drive some,,you will learn to feel at ease with the car,,the rest is watching out for everybody else out there that probably shouldn't have a drivers license,,it,s not a hard job,,don't look at it like its hard,,look at it like its a new challenge, and this one is easy to beat,,i hope this helps.
