Tarzan, The Ape Man has always been the sentimental favorite, but there were many complaints (some, I heard, from the Estate) that the role was dummied down, because the production team thought that was what the audience wanted. Johnny was and is still a great Tarzan.
The closest film to the book is Greystoke, which gives the character back his book identity--which probably disappointed many Weissmuller fans, but I still like both films as if they were not related. I'm glad the author's original work eventually saw daylight as a movie.
The last Tarzan actor seen by ERB was Mike Henry, whose thinking jungle man got the author's seal of approval. B.

Okay, let me go out on a limb here, and say it's definitely 'Tarzan the ape man" with Johnny Weismuller, and Maureen O'Sullivan.
One of the first talking Tarzan movies.
Johnny, was Tarzan for about fifteen years, and they also added Boy. A younger version of Tarzan.
Although the movie is in black and white, and was released in the 1930's, it holds up well, and I haven't seen a better Tarzan Johhny Weismuller.
Check it out, when they show it again on TCM. It's well worth checking out.

In a strange way, Tarzan the Apeman with Bo Derek. It avoids all the discussion about origins and goes straight to the love story.
