Hi EFF Furnaces seem to have DC Motors for variable speed fan control. The claim is that it can give you a savings of $200 - $300 annual savings. Is this true? Any one had experience?

The variable speed fan motor is a great advancement in technology that not only reduces energy costs, but increases comfort levels and assists in indoor air quality control. A true variable speed fan motor can have over 20 speeds, shifting up and down smoothly like an automatic transmission. The primary reason for increased efficiency is the ability to extract more moisture from the air (humidity) by starting in a low speed. The air moves across the evaporator coil at a slower rate, allowing the cooling fins to condense and extract more moisture.

Typically, the super-high efficiency systems feature a dual-speed compressor as well, and the combined efficiency results in a savings much higher than the amount you mentioned. Some of my clients had annual savings of $1000.00 or more.

Almost all of the major brands feature variable speed fan motors on their more efficiant equipment, and many now have the dual-speed compressors as well. The cost/benefit ratio in most situations indicate that the additional expense for increased efficiency is well worth the price.
