i've seen bright shooting stars streak across the sky, faraway rain clouds illuminated by the cities underneath.

once, a satellite i was watching flashed two times, odd.

never seen the northern lights but they're supposed to be visible tonight!

oh, and i saw the moon hanging really low in the sky, there were some houses on a hill just slightly below and it looked so large and bright.

I had one of those "Hollywood moments" several years ago, where the sky could not have been more entertaining. Over the lake, off to the south was the edge of a lightning storm - too far for us to hear the thunder but close enough for us to see the clouds light up. Above us was a perfectly clear sky with a waning moon and twinkling stars and a shooting star or two (it was in August). To the north, we could make out the faint yet joyful dances of the Aurora Borealis - the Northern lights. The fire flies hovering over the water in the distance just added to the wonder of it all...

To answer your question: I have found the moon to be one of my favourite parts of the night sky: it is consistent, predictable and has an effect on our tides on Earth. When I am travelling and feel a little homesick, I look to the moon and realize that friends and family back home can see that very same moon, and I don't feel so far away. (Sappy, I know...)

There are so many wondrous sights in the sky. Personally, I like to lie on my back with a pair of wide-view binoculars and look up into the heart of the Milky Way. The number of stars you can see is mind-boggling.

What you saw was probably an old booster or some other large space debris that was tumbling, thus changing the angle of sunlight bouncing off it.

There is no one item/object/phenomena which is over archingly beautiful about the night sky, to me. What really takes my breath away is that as you gaze at all those lights you are really looking back in time. Objects like M31 the andromeda galaxy is two million light years away! So the next time some one asks how far can you see with the naked eye, tell them at least two million light years. It is very humbling to contemplate our total insignificance in the vastness of space. This rock we call earth is however ideally suited to our survival. Let's just hope we don't destroy it.

The stars are like diamonds in the sky. On a good night they'll put Tiffany's to shame. I especially love a full moon. You feel like you could reach up and touch it. Just beautiful.

To really enjoy the night sky you must travel far from the city lights. The northern lights are to die for. Very mystical and enchanting.

well when it's really clear, the stars are really beautiful, along with the moon, because they're so bright, yet the sky is very dark.
