A check valve is a mechanical device, a valve, that normally allows fluid or gas to flow through it in only one direction. A double check valve is often used as a backflow prevention device to keep potentially contaminated water from siphoning back into municipal water supply lines

A foot valve is for use as inlet of suction pipe. A modified check valve that has a screen on the suction end to prevent debris from entering the pump or pipe. IIt protects against loss of prime, aids in priming the pump and protects the pump from large debris.

Check valves are designed to prevent back flow. A globe valve is used when the ability to throttle and control the flow is desired. The globe valve can be positioned at anywhere from 1% to 100% flow. This allows for very precise control over how much liquid will be allowed to flow through the valve. There is another type of valve called a gate valve. The gate valve can not be positioned with such precision as the globe valve and it is used when flow rate is not as important.

A foot valve is a check valve with a screen to stop debris. It depends on whether you're pumping water with alot of sediment.

basically the same but a foot valve is at the bottom of a pipe and includes the filters,, a check valve is usually just on top of the filter screens,,, they just keep the water from flowing back into the ground and you having to reprime the pump....yes,, they keep the pump primed!!
