Can I be an altruist whether or not I am politically a liberal, a conservative,or a little of both?

Political affiliation really has nothing to do with anything else.

If you want to help people, go ahead. That's a wonderful thing.

But also consider letting go of the labels and the categories. Be an individual. Support the specific issues that you think are important, regardless of where they might fall onto some arbitrary spectrum.

I just don't see how it could be possible for you to be an altruist conservative , especially today with the current president and this Administration. The altruist holds the unselfish regards for the interests of others, Now that's a liberal attitude and I feel Liberals and altruists could be one and the same. But they could not be part of, nor could they have a bit of both .parties within themselves , I don't see any altruism's not even a shadow coming out of the conservatives .I don't see the Democrats and Republicans of today having any similar ideals what so ever, nor do I feel they could resolve their differences for many years to come. So in answer to your question I would have to say no!

Many liberal and conservative are altruistic. Former President Jimmy Carter is an important member of Habitat for Humanity. Most people know that.

However, few people know that so is former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich.

So, as long as you do it with your own time and money, you can be as altruistic as you please, no matter your political leanings.

Why would your political party influence your outlook on life? Traditionally people who feed the homeless and care about the well being of others are democrats, but there is no reason that a conservative can't take time out of his busy schedule of self involvement to help someone less fortunate.

Yes, altruism simply means that you are willing to sacrifice yourself simply for other people's sake, with no expectation of thanks or reward. Whether you're a conservative doing it for a Christian, a Liberal for a Gay person or whatever else, doesn't really matter imho.
