Java is a programming language - it's used to write software. Viruses can take advantage of bugs or poorly-written code in Java or most other programming languages, but Java itself will not put a virus on your computer. A lot of the games in the Yahoo games area use Java.
If you only want to run Java programs on your computer, not make them, you can download and install the runtime environment from Sun. Make sure you only download it from the official site:

Java is a programming language, and generally will not put a virus on your computer. When you hear things like 'java applet' or 'java application', that only means that an applet or application was written using java.
One of Java's tenets is that a program is written once, and can be run on any platform whether it is Windows, Mac, Unix, etc. However, in order to run on any of these platforms a Java Runtime Environment must be installed. If you do not have a JRE installed, you will not be able to run a java applet or application.
The current incarnation of Java has undergone extensive engineering to make sure that your computer's security is not compromised. However, that is not a guarantee that someone will not try to do something malicious. Be sure to know where your java apps are coming from, and if you still don't feel secure enough, you can disable java in your internet options.
The only way to be 100% secure is to never connect to the Internet, but seeing as that's not a practical option, just use some common sense and be careful.
* Use a personal firewall
* Use anti-virus software
* Use a spyware detector like Ad-Aware, or SpyBot Search & Destroy

Java is a computer language that allows people to write programs to run within web pages. Only a person can make a virus and put it on someone's computer. A virus is a program made by a person.
