It'll just add to the heat already there. The cooling derived from a fan is only for the people, since the moving air allows perspiration to evaporate more efficiently.
Just moving the air without anyone present is counter productive.

A ceiling fan will help circulate the air to make the room a more even temperature. It wont make the house any 'cooler'. It will though allow you to turn up the thermostat and 'seem' cooler because the fan is helping evaporate the sweat you have on you skin helping you feel cooler.
The fan is helpful when you occupy a room or when you are trying to maintain a balace of cool air if you have a problem area where it is warmer in one area than the other.

we stay in a house with cathederal ceilings, there are 2 followers set at different heights interior the finished room and they run 12 months round to flow air. In wintry climate warmth rises and the followers are set to flow the air up which in turn strikes the nice and cozy air off the ceiling and facilitates shop temperature even. In summer we opposite the followers to flow air down which has the end results of cooling.

its best to turn it off because it wont make the house cooler it will just make the room to a better temperature and will give you some cold air if you stay in the room. TURN IT OFF if you're not in the room or house.

OK....I'm not yelling at YOU, but for Petes' Sake.
Iv'e tried to explane this to my Wife.
Fans ONLY circulate air.
If anything, it warms the air from the heat from the electric motor.
FANS DO NOT COOL THE AIR!!!
