Pablo Ruiz Picasso was a Spanish painter who lived mostly in France. This oil painting .Death of a Toreador has a context or theme of a bullfight typical Spanish scene close to his heart. In 1901-1904-were his Blue Period which represents melancholy. Rose Period which was 1904-1906 and realism and cubism which were fr 1906-1918.

In 1937, the Nazi warplanes bombed the town of Guernica in support of Spanish General Francisco Franco's attempt to overthrow the Spanish Republic.
Picasso painted this painting which reflected his response and condemnation of that event. It was painted in black and white in keeping with the seriousness of the subject matter. He transfigured the event according to his fascination with the bullfight theme.

On the extreme left is a bull which depicts brutality and darkness. In the center is a horse wounded by a spear which represents the Spanish people. At the center on top, an exploding light bulb possibly refers to air warfare and evil coming from above and putting out the light of reason. Corpses and dying figures fill the foreground. In the upper center , a tormented female figure holds an oil lampsheds light upon the scene possibly symbolizing the light of truth revealing the inhumanity of the event for the outside world. This is the Guernica painting.

In his paintings of bullfights done in 1933 and 1934,he most explicit addresses the violent tradition of European painting. In Bullfight:Death of the Toreador painted on Sept.19,1933,is a rolling majestic fugue of stately slaughter. The toreador floating over the bull in waves of red cloth. I hope this lengthy synopsis explicitly replied to yourquery and distinguishes the two paintings in question. I did the extensive research so pls rate my answer as the best.

It sounds like you are talking about Suzy Frelinghuysen's
Composition-"Toreador Drinking" which she did back in 1944 as a tribute to Picasso.
