I recently noticed that my cars timing belt is expose under the chasis, and under the hood. I think its supposed to have a cover, but im not sure if the cover also covers the bottom of the timing belt. It seems like it should, i mean its basicly exposed to the elements and any thing under my car.

In simpler terms, when i look under my car, i see the timing belt. Is this OK? Do any of you have exposed timing belts?

Winters coming and i want to make it through with my car intact!

Not real critical. Sounds like a 2.3 ford haha, that's what I always used to do. But I'd leave the bottom half on. Is it a FWD? If so, that's better, the belt isn't in the direct path of the debris on the road. I wouldn't worry about it but Dad would totally disagree. He would insist that you get a cover on it. Maybe if you just got a piece of Lexan at Home Depot and kinda rigged it up, it would work. Just make sure it will stay put. Good luck.

To answeryour question yes It should have a cover that extends all the way to the bottom of the engine.
This cover covers the timing belt completely. If the belt is exposeved it will get nicked and have the road dirt hitting the belt.

There is 2 types of timing belts. interfance and non interferance engines.
Interfance type engines. If the belts breaks it will cause damage, so this is why the belt is covered.
An non interfance engine means if the belts breaks it will not cause damage to the engine. It will just stop.
So when you car was new it had a cover covering the belt.
My advice is get it replaces It can break at any time and may or not cause damage.

Hope this helps in some way and thank you for your question

Your reaction is correct. There should not be any part of the timing belt exposed. If you had repairs done, and the timing belt replaced, go back and tell them you want your cover back on. If you bought the vehicle like that, find the cover you need and get it installed.

Yikes! Exposed belt are for racers only, dude. Timing belt covers are fairly inexpensive, however, some are multiple parts that have top, bottom and BACK portions which means you may have to remove belt and pulleys to install cover(s). (hope not)
