SInce everyone is on the tarp, have everyone roll to one side of the tarp. Now take the tarp and bring it around, like you are about to roll the people up in the tarp, but just have the people, keep rolling and keep pulling the tarp in the same direction, and eventually everyone would have rolled onto the "new" side of the tarp. I can see it, but its hard to explain.....

As a guess -

If you have two people at one end each take a corner of the tarp, fold the very edge over. Making sure the folded part does not lift off of the ground, slide it *slowly* over towards the other end. as the folded part reaches anyone on the tarp, they should carefully walk on top of it, and keep taking steps as the tarp moves.

I would think that the people on the tarp would have to be very coordinated to pull this off. Also, depending on the size of the tarp, I'm sure the number of people (40 in your example) wouldn't matter.

Turn the tarp into a tube by having the people line on one edge. Everyone pick up the edge, and bring it over their head, while still hanging onto it.

walk that edge, while holding it, to the other edge, bending down to have the edges meet, essentially making a tube.

Placing the edge they were holding down on the ground, butted up against the edge already on the ground, push the newly placed edge out enough to step on, and roll it out as they walk forward, flipping the tarp.

There is a way to do it with plane coordinates, algebraically, but it might defy the laws of physics.

Like Lisa Marie I was thinking they better be adult ants or something small. Adult mice maybe? Or maybe its a trick question like write "40 aduts" on the tarp with a marker and then flip it over.

this is a toughie, why dont you roll up the tarp with the adults in it . the only problem with that is the adult will be underneath the tarp when you unroll it.

have everyone squish to one side of the tarp then flip the half that is uncovered (like twist it over) and then slowly transfer people to that side one by one and as you go keep flipping the tarp. slowly this should work! good luck!

you roll them up and attach the ends of the tarp to a tractor and pull it to the top of a hill. unattach it and give them a good push! they will flip over and over and over....
