The doctor prescribed Nystatin and the info sheet I got with the prescription said it caused nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or stomach upset. Please tell me, those of you who've used this with your babies, that these side effects do not occur very often...makes me almost not want to give it to her! If these symptoms did occur with any of your babies, how bad was it, and what did you do for it? Health food store did not carry gentian violet, by the way. Thx!

I used Nystatin with my son, and he had no reaction to it. He even seemed to like the taste!

If you are breastfeeding, you need to be careful not to catch the trush from your child. After you finish a feeding session, put some of the Nystatin on your nipples as well and let it air-dry. This will make sure you don't pass the thrush back and forth between baby and you, which can be both painful and frustrating!

I could only find the gentian violet at a old-time family pharmacy so if you have one in your area you might try there. I have used nystatin without any of the listed side effects but preferred the violet.

I had to use Nystatin with my middle child. She didn't have any of those side effects. The only problem I had was getting her to keep the stuff in her mouth.

For the baby's sake, give it to her..she is probably in some pain ( i remember the crying and fits) Good luck to you and I hope it clears up soon. OH, if you are breastfeeding, you may need to keep a check on yourself.

I swear sometimes it seems the side effects are worse than the condition itself. :)

I used Nystatin with my younger son who had a case of thrush. (It was yellow and thick, and I had to put a couple droppers full in his mouth three time a day.)

He didn't have any reactions like diarrhea or vomiting. He loved the medicine though...it was sweet. :)

Good luck, and I hope your baby will get better soon.

Two of my three children had thrush as babies, they did not have any of the side effects from the nystatin. I also work in daycare and have not seen much in the way of reactions.

The side effects sheets that come with any medication are lists of side effects that occur if even one person who took the medicine got it. I had to give it to my daughter and she did not experience any of those symptoms. Your doctor would not give it to you if it wasn't safe. By the way it is much safer than gentian violet.

i have had 6 babies the youngest being 10 weeks old and they have all had oral thrush from b/f, i have used nystatin on all babies with no side affects, what i would be more concerned about is the affect the thrush would have if it went untreated.

My son had it when he was about 5 months old and was perscribed the same thing..It worked wonders! just a thin layer on the affected layer, and it would work within a few days. Unless you baby has an alergy to it, then I don't see any problems. Just try a small area at first and then see if it bothers your baby. good luck!

I don't think the side effects are all that common.
I wouldn't worry too much about it. If she has thrush, she really does need to be treated.
If you are breastfeeding and baby has thrush, BOTH of you need to be treated or you'll just pass it back and forth.
