I've been advised to renew and release my ipconfig via command prompt, but it can't do this because my media state is disconnected... what does this mean and what do I do about it?!

Basically I'm trying to sort out a wireless router for my internet, and am running into problems. I have a 'wireless modem' PPP adapter which connects to the internet fine...

help?

Thanks!

hmmm, neither of those suggestions did anything, thanks tho!!! I am certainly on the internet, so it is connected, just not the 'media'...

i'm not sure if this is important, but I'm not on the wireless router yet, still on an ethernet cable connection... It's the router I'm trying to install, it can't seem to configure itself!

well, your computer can have multiple connections. Especially if you have software that uses other connected devices like firewire or some USB ports.

There is some connection somewhere that isn't connected. It could be as easy as a pptp connection that isn't in use or as stated before a firewire connection or even another network card (or modem for that matter).

Sounds like your drivers for your wireless card are either not working right, or your configuration requres you to change something. To setup a wireless network correctly, it shouldn't really be plug-and-play. Not sure I can give you much more advice without more detailed information.

It means your IP has expired.

Go to Network And Dial-Up Connections (found in Control Panel or a shortcut if you have one). Right click on your wireless card connection icon, select Enable.

It should fix itself.

from the DOS command prompt, or from Start, Run:

type ipconfig renew (that's ipconfig space renew)

If you are being told you are disconnected, it sounds like you are not presently online. Can you get online then try it?
