A wired connection is easy. The desktop has two regular nics and a wifi. The broadband adapter is connected to the onboard nic. But the other computer is a laptop and I want to keep it wireless to prevent people tripping on wires.

Yes, you can use ad hoc mode. However, keep in mind that you must have one computer physically connected via a wire, such as Ethernet, to your LAN, modem, gateway, etc.
The 802.11 standard supports radio Network Interface Cards (NIC) that can transmit to each other. Ad hoc is usually for a small number of users and has some limited network access, but is a great money saving alternative to purchasing a wireless router as an access point.

Many wireless adapters have a peer to peer (ad hoc) mode where they can communicate without a router.
But if you want to share internet access, a wireless router makes much more sense.
You will still be able to access the computers from one another, but the router will allow them both to connect to the internet without the overhead of ICS.

A router is the piece of hardware that decodes forwards data packets that your computer sends, and enables all the wireless cards to be connected together, you can't have a virtual one, you have to buy a physical one.

You don't need a router. Just set both cards to ad-hoc mode.
