Personnally, I hate all the goofy graphics, the color coordinated riding gear etc. Loud obnoxious pipes, etc.
I prefer a stealthy ride like my black ZX-14. No outrageous graphics, quite, comfortable seating for 2-up. But when you punch it, it will rip your arms out, flatten your eyeballs, and snap your neck like a toothpick. Yeah its great.
I prefer low key, especially around cops. It's easier to spot a bright red, yellow, or green bike in a sea of cars if you've been quadrupling speed limits and they are trying to dragnet you.
A graphicless black sportbike blends in nicely.

They may just be looking around to make sure that there aren't any hazards on the road. You've got to be careful on a motorcycle - they're less visible, so car drivers are more likely to hit a bike than a car. And something that would only be a nuisance on a car could be fatal on a motorcycle. Just two days ago I had to dodge a piece of carpet blocking my lane on the freeway that probably would not have been bad if I'd hit it in my car, but I doubt I could have kept it rubber side down if I'd hit the carpet on my bike.

To be honest there are two types out there. There is the go maniac trying to show him or her self up. I dont' like to think of this as a true rider. As the only riding they do is to a friends house then to a club to show off. Incidentally these are also the ones who support the blood doner statistic.
Real riders love to ride. It's all about freedom, speed, and being outdoors. For this it doesn't matter what you ride, yo uwill find this is more dependent on the kind of riding you do. Long distance street riding = cruiser, canyon riding, track riding = sport bike. off road enduro.
brand name doesn't matter as it's a personal choice.

For some shallow people, it probably is. Those are the same people who end up crashing them within a few months, jacking up insurance for the rest of us. I've been riding sport bikes for 12 years now because I love the speed and handling they offer, not for the show. As far as looking around a lot, that's good as long as they are watching the traffic around them, not people staring.

Well, I'm a cruiser guy myself, so I wouldn't consider them an accessory per se. But, to each their own. Pretty expensive fashion accessory!
