I have two tattoos, and I got them both before I was 20. One is on my stomach (BAD!), and now that I've been with child, what used to be a butterfly is now a terradactyl. It's all stretched and ugly. I hate it. My other tatto is a parrot behind my right shoulder. I got it to cover up the home-done initials of a boyfriend I got when I was 14 (it was a new years party, free tattos for everyone, I thought what the hell). I've had to re-colour the parrot several times because after about 2 years it fades and looks like crap. I also don't know what I was thinking when I chose to get a parrot tattooed to my shoulder - Aye!Aye! Matey! However, at the time I thought it represented beauty, freedom, and the earth... blech.
So, in short. I hate my tattoos (I'm 29 now, so I've had them for at least 9+ years), and I would not reccomend a tattoo. But my friend Mineko got the word Truth, or maybe Joy, tattooed in japanese letters to her ankle when she was in highschool, and that's still cool. It's just black and simple. Stay away from colours.

I was 18 when I got my tattoo, and I am now 25. I don't regret getting my tattoo, but if I were to get another one, I would definitely put it somewhere that was easy to hide (the one I have now is in the small of my back, and it's so easy to cover up). My tattoo is solid black, so it needs to be re-shaded now, but I still like it, and I picked a significant symbol for me (one that had really special meaning) for my tattoo - it's not something I've ever seen on anyone else. Good tattoo artists autoclave their instruments and do not re-use needles. If you're not sure whether they do or not, ask. If you don't see a tat you want on the walls of a shop, you should be able to ask the artist to draw it out for you and transfer the design to your skin for the ink. Also, take some tylenol before you go to get your tattoo, because it does hurt, especially the outline. Do NOT take motrin (ibuprofen), aspirin, or naproxen, as they can cause increased bleeding. Other than that, enjoy! :)

First let me tell you that getting a tattoo is a serious decision. Once you get it you will more than likely have it for the rest of your life. That said think carefully about what you want to have tattooed on you. I myself have tattoos all over my upper body and arms. I've had them for a long time. Depending upon who does your tattoo as you get older you will find that you have to have it retouched. I don't regret a single tattoo I've gotten. Good luck on your decision.

my husband has a tattoo that's 6 yrs old and he hates it.
but then again my neighbor has tattoos that's over 15 years old and he gets them touched up every 3 years and just got 2 more tattoos. its all up to you if you want to mark yourself or not. personally I'm wanting one and I'm young. i know the consequences of the tattoo leaving a permanent mark, but that's part of it. make it of something that really means something to you. make it of the heart and you'll never worry about it.
