Let's face it. True metal died in the 90s. What now remains are empty shadows, excluding only a few. Today rock still exists, but with a 75% ratio of overall crapulence. What happened? Every time (yes, EVERY TIME) I watch MTV2 or Fuse to see some rock or metal videos, I end up listening for 30 seconds and flip the station in disgust. Bands now wear wierd goth/emo clothes with frilly colored hair... and glitter (I'm looking at you, AFI). They scream and whine like it's the end of the world, about stupid sh*t. Bands like Nickelback (just the same songs over and over again), Trapt (not even worth the pixels in thier name), and GODSMACK, as well as thier own pathetic followers all follow formulas in thier music. Album after album, song after song; they still sound the same. The genres of rock and metal simply cannot evolve in our current situation. The way things are going, does anybody else fear that our beloved, and once-dominant genres will be dead within the next 20 or so years?

Look, I've got nothing against Godsmack, but admit that they aren't going anywhere, dude. They certainly aren't as bad as AFI, Trapt or Nickelback, but they perfectly illustrate my example of how our music isn't changing.

I totally get what you're saying.

I got so sick of modern music that I didn't listen to the radio for an entire year, and then I turned it on the other day and was like 'OMG THEY'RE STILL PLAYING THE SAME FREAKING SONGS.' And then I kept listening and realized that they were different lyrics.

I WISH that that was an exaggeration, but I honestly couldn't tell that most of them were different songs. It's pathetic.

I got the point too. I'm a music teacher... I teach Guitar, Bass Guitar and Drums and need to know what's going on with modern rock bands and nu-metal 'cause my students ask me to teach them new stuff but there's a nice thing about it: When I show the most talented students the "old"stuff they changed their minds.

One of my drums students used to liked Nightwish, Therion, and so on... now he loves Judas Priest, Manowar, Iron Maiden, etc. The guitar students who asked me to teach them modern rock songs are now meeting great 80's and 70's rock bands and are into "guitar god's" licks.

To me, that means ther is a hope... From Black Sabbath to Metallica there are bands who still sell a lot of CD's. Would Nickelback be remembered in 10 years as now we remember Deep Purple? I don't think so!

You are preaching to the choir, but I think metal died with the 'hair metal' scene. Nu metal has capitalized, but failed artistically. The 'Metal' label is dying. I did like St. Anger though......it seemed like a wake up call to the imitators out there, didn't it? Don't hit me! I am Canadian, but please.......Nickelback? They aren't worth a penny. Chad of NickelSmack brags that he could play any Metallica song when he was 13..........then he should write compositions like Metallica.....shouldn't he? Isn't he just playing to the masses who wouldn't know metal if it bit them on the bum?

All I can say is, I'll take the rock music from the 60s and 70s. I don't care for some of todays rock.

True metal is alive and kicking. It's in the underground with the real fans where it should be.
