Can any of my British friends tell me what a steamie is?

For years I've wanted to know what Richard Thompson was on about when he referred to taking a job in the steamie in his song "Bee's Wing". I can only assume it's a laundry? Please put me right. Thanks!

If you're talkin' about a "cleveland steamer," then I can help you with that, lmaooo. But the term "steamie" sounds dirty, too... :-p
