My husband-he is black and I am white-will not go to a Lynard Skynard concert (we live in VA) because he thinks he would be in danger because of his race. He would not cause any ruckus he just thinks that someone might object to us being there and start something. What do you all think?

Look, I am from Central Pennsylvania, one of the most racist areas in the country. From what I have observed, racists people are no joke. If the man feels threatned, he maybe he has a good reason...you should respec his wishes. After all, it;s better to maybe be annoyed that he wont go to this concert than spend the rest fo your life possibly feeling guilty if anything were to happen to him

I'm white and lived in VA in a lesbian relationship with a black woman. I couldn't wait to get back to CA. There will be some red necks in the crowd. If your husband doesn't feel comfortable going you should respect that. Virginia is after all the south.

Hmmm...

Well, it is 2006--so I would think that even the typical Lynrd Skynrd crowd would have at progressed a little by now. However, it also depends on what part of VA you guys might be in.

If I were you (and this is just me--I assume no responsiblity for your safety), I'd take him and go. If someone starts some crap, file a police report and sue them for a nice chunk of change.

I think your husband is being a little crazy, I don't think someone will start anything unless they are provoted. Tell him to go and have some fun. I myself wouldn't go, not because I'm with a white woman, but because I don't like Lynare Skynard. Maybe he don't like him either and just don't want to go.

I've never been to Virginia and cannot speak from first-hand experience, but unless the concert venue is in some real redneck backwater, I would be shocked in this day and age if an interracial couple in America were hassled about it. If anyone did bother you, you would be in the right and could complain to security, but you should not be prevented from going to a concert by this. I hope I'm not wrong.

If anyone objects, thats their problem, not your husbands! He cannot stop going to places because someone may object. He has a life to live.Your husband should go to the concert with you, ignore idiots and enjoy yourselves. Remember there are laws protecting your husband. Go, live your lives! Have a good time, hope you enjoy the concert,WITH your husband!

Unless you live in one of those small towns where people are still living in a backwards community where the KKK actively recruits, in today's day and age, bi-racial relationships and marriages are pretty much accepted. Of course, there are always some ignorant people who always have to cause trouble and make racial remarks, it is best to just ignore them (in today's world, these people make up the minority, not the majority of people). The only way that bi-racial relationships become more widely accepted is to just go out there and live life!

Sounds like an excuse not to go if u ask me. No one care about crap like that anymore. Except the ones like your husband that keep it alive. They are there to see Skynard not your husband.

Well it is America after all. He has sound reasons to be concerned. The land of the free is still plagued by hate, racism and violence. Personally I am nervous just replying to your question and I live in Australia. Have you considered leaving the USA and joining the normal world?
