To see a broader area and aim better with the high powered objectives.

In some cases, you need to look at patterns of growth (which may not be visible at higher magnifications), or keep a cell count on a whole-plate grid (where you need to keep your place as you count) so low power is sometimes best for these cases.

Also, occassionally some microscopes won't focus properly unless the slide is so close that using a (longer) high-objective lens will crack it, so low power is your only choice.
