I have a Mac and I love it! The reason they are expensive is because of all of the features they have right out of the box. They are also better built, look cooler, and are more modern that PCs. Also, why don't you get a MacMini? I live in the US, and they run for about $600. I believe thats around 300 pounds over there. All you need is a USB mouse, a keyboard, and a display, and there you go. You don't have to use Apple's displays or keyboards or mice. So if money is really an issue, go for the MacMini. It's not a laptop, but it's certainly a lot cheaper than all of their other Macs. Hope this helps, and feel free to email me if you have any other questions. Good luck!

Mac does things right the first time, Windows was rushed to the market, and because it was first, lots of people bought it. This still happens today, Mac doesn't have 2% of the viruses that Windows has, a Windows somewhere gets hit every 30 seconds. Apple also has very miminal updates, compaired to Windows. The only downside is the price, but you can be a 100% sure that you are getting an awsome computer. http://www.apple.com/getamac/
But Mac because Mac is secure, there are a few things you can't do on a Mac that you can do on a Windows, if you know a lot about Windows, I'd still keep with it, but Mac has a lot less hassle

There are loads of reasons why Macs are better some of which have been discussed here, you don't need to be concerned about new models - just buy the model that does what you need to do and be happy with it until it becomes so obsolete that it becomes more of a hindrance than anything else which would probably be in three or four years time - of course you can choose to upgrade sooner to newer models or keep the one you originally bought for longer. But anyway...
If you're a student then you could apply to Apple Education, from there you should be able to view the Educational range of hardware with some nice hefty discounts (around 30% I think) but you need to prove you're an enrolled HE or FE Student before they will sell anything to you.
If the link below doesn't work then visit their Online UK Store and look for the Education link.

The reason to buy a mac is the hardware is top notch, those cheaper windows based laptops usually have inferior hardware.
You really don't need to buy a mac they only truely offer a pretty graphical front end (easily emulated), and ease of use. Mac is based on Darwin linux and so you can get the entire kernel of OS X by just running Darwin or OpenDarwin which are both free on some normal hardware, you just have to be willing to learn a lot more than if you bought a mac. Macs don't catch as many viruses (there are I believe 54 that can effect a mac), they are more stable due to be based upon unix/linux kernel, easy to use almost no configuration needed even for just installing applications. OS X has Vista beat Vista has dropped so many of its features that would have made it compete now Vista may look as pretty as OS X but under the hood will be just as unreliable as before. Comparing OS X to XP is not legitimate OS X is a brand new operating system XP is very outdated.

Why the MacBook Pro? For a student, unless you are into heavy video editing or graphic design, the MacBook is a far cheaper and just as viable an option.
I would also double check your figures. What do you get on that "cheaper" pc notebook? Match the specs up and see what you find. Macs are not as expensive as they once were, and when you put them up against the better PCs, they price quite favorably. Why aren't you complaing about how expensive a Sony Viao is?

I have been using Macs almost exclusively at home since 2000. I work in the IT field so it's nice to be able to come home to something that just works the way you expect it to. I've never had an issue with any of my Macs that has required customer service so I can't say much about them, but a friend lost his PowerMac in a power surge and they were very helpful.
I like that I don't have to worry about viruses, spyware, adware, trojans, browser hijacks, worms or the latest Windows exploit of the week. I like that things in Mac OS X make sense. I don't have to go through endless control panels, tabs and dialog boxes just to connect to a wireless network or perform some other routine task. Usually the first place you guess to configure something is the right place. I like the simplicity of installing and uninstalling software - drag an icon into your Applications folder to install and put it in the trash to uninstall. On top of it all, with the exception of games there is no software on Windows that I can't get a direct port or equivalent of. Anyone who says Macs are not compatible is plain wrong.
Macs are really not that expensive either when you compare them to equivalent PC's. I believe you get what you pay for and the few extra bucks are worth it, but that's just my opinion. I suggest you stop by an Apple store and take a look for yourself.

one of the main reasons they are so pricey is the quality of the parts they use. they use high quality parts right down to the wireing. Even top of the line PC's ussualy use the cheap wireing. this causes things to go wrong more often. Macs just hold up better in general because of the quality of the components.

If you like a reliable computer with excellent customer care (which beats the bad care from other manufaturers and their repair rate), and you like to have stable utilities (A/V stuff, cameras, all that kind of stuff), but aren't worried about games, the MAC is the obvious choice.

yeah, the recent ads would have been better placed a couple years ago when PCs really did have all those problems. For your money stay away from macs.

depends what youre studying i guess. if youre an art student for example get a mac. theyre faster at processing large files and your equipment will just work. theyre more expensive because pcs get viruses and its a pain to get them to work with cameras, printers etc. its just a better machine.
