I know this sounds like an oxymoron but I am curious to know whether there are any people who describe themselves as Conservative when referring to their political views but who also view themselves either as atheists or agnostics. Also if you are such a "creature" , what is your take on Bush's presidency?

Thank you very much for your coherent and intelligent response to my question, Vigilant American. You are absolutely correct in your assumption that buried beneath my question is the assumption that most conservatives are Christian, but I also recognize that people are unique and have their own individual beliefs and that was really the purpose of my inquiry. To draw those people out. I did not mean to deliberately categorize people via labels in any kind of insulting way. I have to tell you that I do not agree with everything you said but you have articulated your point of view in a non combatative way which I find extremely refreshing on this website. I do hope that your answer will encourage more people to respond to my question in an open and honest way such as you did.

OOPs, Mr. Vigilant American. I take back all the nice things I said about you. .I believe in your right to disagree but to lash out and label people who do not see eye to eye with your point of view, "Communist Liberal scumbags and disgusting vermin leftist scum is going far beyond the bounds of honest debate. I am sure that if someone tagged you with such foul labels, you would be none too pleased. Oh and by the way, I will NEVER get your point of view but I wouldn't debase myself either by hurling vile epithets at you..

ThanksPace RIP for responding. It's funny. Your name express my sentiments exactly. Come on, if a gay person is willing to come out of the closet. I still have hope that there are some conservative atheists or agnostics out there who are willing to show their faces. I am certainly not going to bite their heads off. All I'm asking for is a little openess and a non judgemental attitutde which sadly there is not too much of around here on either side.

I doubt that you're going to find anyone here to admit to it. However since your question is somewhat worthy of consideration, why not look at a hypothetical person that would fit your criteria? I could imagine someone that deep down inside is an Atheist or Agnostic. Such a person may or may not outwardly profess an abiding belief in God. They may belong to and actively participate in organized religion to the extent that it furthers their goal of "fitting in" and maintaining appearances. At the same time, they are conservative because those policies best enrich them economically. They are willing to ignore the religious agenda of today's conservatives because they are irrelevant to their goal of maximum economic enrichment to themselves. Although such a person is a hypocrite, I am sure that there are people out there like that. It would not surprise me to find such a person at the top ranks of the Republican Party.

I don't "label" myself. Labels are for sheep.
