Let's face it, in terms of Mass Transit, Health Care, Ports, Infrastructure, Education, National Debt, General Welfare, Crime, Quality of Life, Emergency Response, even basic techonology such as access to cheap high speed internet, Scientific research such as stem cell research, etc., etc. ... it seems to me we are lagging more and more behind other countries. This is based on travels and discussions with happy expatriates. What's the problem? America Love it or Leave it is not an acceptable answer. Talk about it, please tell me that I'm wrong.

Carie, you're amazing. I specifically said "Love it or Leave it" is not acceptable. Yet you just couldn't resist. I just love people who stick their necks in the sand and say, "if you don't like it here, move to Mexico". A more courageous attitude is "if you don't like it here, talk about it, face facts, get out of denial - then try to do something to make it better".

Partisan bickering.
Politicians are more concerned about getting re-elected and scoring political points than they are with actually resolving problems.
Huge amounts of time and effort are spent addressing ideological and philosophical issues, because those highly-emotional topics are what get their constituents all riled up. It's drama.
Roads and subways and broadband and police training are not sexy topics. They don't hold people's interest. So, there's no incentive for politicians to work on them, because they don't get people excited. And with a 40% voter turnout rating, only the people who have an axe to grind participate in the voting process.
So, to get votes, politicians spend their efforts on issues that create drama and rally their fringe supporters. Instead of focusing on issues that will actually make a difference in our daily lives.

Finally, a good question !!!!!!!
You know David Rockafeller ? Federal Reserve Bank...
The Illuminatis are divised in differents Lodges, like the lodge 322. The Skull and Bone society. Also called Death Clan by the members. They are controling the senate, congress, industry, economy, the banks, the medias...
Please, investigate my links after, you will see yourself.
And this is what Bush’s minions had to say in 2000;-
"Further, the process of transformation, even if it brings revolutionary change, is likely to be a long one, absent some catastrophic and catalyzing event – like a new Pearl Harbor"
Project for the New American Century (2000)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Project_for_the_New_American_Century
“Naturally the common people don't want war; neither in Russia, nor in England, nor in America, nor in Germany. That is understood. But after all, it is the leaders of the country who determine policy, and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is to tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any country.”
Hermann Göring(Nazi) 1946 Nuremberg Trials
"We are on the verge of a global transformation. All we need is the right major crisis and the nations will accept the New World Order."
David Rockefeller: Statement to the United Nations Business Council in September 1994
"For more than a century, ideological extremists at either end of the political spectrum have seized upon well-publicized incidents to attack the Rockefeller family for the inordinate influence they claim we wield over American political and economic institutions. Some even believe we are part of a secret cabal working against the best interests of the United States, characterizing my family and me as 'internationalists' and of conspiring with other around the world to build a more integrated global political and economic structure - one world, if you will. If that is the charge, I stand guilty, and I am proud of it." David Rockefellers memoirs (2002)
Soon, all will change. The whole economic system is gonna blow, and the power will flee to China, and India.

Because George Bush doesent give a s h i t about you common folk. He said it him self. During one of those times he thought the mic was off, I heard it. Your getting poorer but the rich are getting richer because old George is a Corporate a s s Kisser that only gives a s h i t about his rich buddies. Look at his circle of friends
The Enron Ceo, and people like that. They dont feel the pain of a higher cost of living. Old George is working for the rich f u c k the poor. But your going to relect them watch and see. I wonder if New Orleans will be rebuilt by then.

As an American who happens to travel abroad a lot, the answer is absolutely not.
No country can be the best in everything. You need to look at the overall picture. We are, arguably, politically, economically and militarily the most powerful country on earth. Despite some erosion, the civil liberties that we enjoy hereare unparalleled.
I understand the frustrations that lead to the question and concern about whether we are sliding back. Perhaps we do in some areas. Let us try to make it even better by addressing its problems. But overall this is the best country to be. I would rather be an American than any body else.
God Bless America.

This is the natural outcome of laissez faire capitalism and the right-wing assault on communitarian values. Bill Clinton was destroyed immediately because he represented govt that could work for Americans.
It is a shame what brainwashed dupes we are. Waitresses in Germany start a job with six weeks paid vacation. You may never get that in America. Or health care.
I have not been able to believe our last few experiences at hospitals. One must bring food for one's family, one must hassle staff to get rudimentary care, one must clean the rooms, one must check the charts and make sure no one is messing up.

Because many people in the US are too short-sighted and only care about lower taxes and what's best for themselves.
They should be more concerned about reducing crime and poverty instead of increasing the gap between the rich and the poor, and marginalizing gays and women. Not to mention preserving what's left of our natural environment.

You're right we are lagging behind other countries wither regard to health care crime scientific research etc. Look at Cuba they provide their citizens with free health care and they exist on a shoe string, but are far more advanced than the US and many European countries when it comes to health care and research. Their medical system is second to none.
The problem here is that current administration has the wrong priorities. They are sinking $450 Billion into defence each year, this neverending 'war on terror' eats up hundreds of billions and yet the world is a lot more dangerous now than when Bush came to power. So the Arms Industry is cleaning up to the tune of many Billions, at the expense of our education system health care, technology and scientific research. I am shocked at the level of apathy and ignorance and the fact that no one seems to be challening Bush on his failing policies foreign and otherwise.
Shawn is right..Bush does not give a hoot about ordinary folk, he is so alligned with the corporate world, especially arms ind. pharmecuticals and oil. Conoleeza Rice shoed her true colours on the day that New Orleans was drowning and her own race were clinging to their pitiful few belongings shivering on rooftops as they watched their belongings float away in the putrid water. Where was Condi? liasing help from her office? was she like hell. Condi was buying up half the stock of Ferragamo on Madison Avenue. That just shows you what Bush and his buddies are really like, they really could not give a monkey's *** about ordinary working class people.
