Both of these can be terrible. A bad criminal history can keep you out of a lot of jobs, especially those requiring a security clearance or where you must be trusted to make good choices. Bad work habits, which build into a history can be just as bad or worse. We may decide to hire someone with a criminal record if we think they've reformed, but if they don't show up for work they'll get fired. Even if you have no criminal record at all, you need to have good work habits to get and to keep a job.

I look at stability, ability, and willingness as the three things I need to hire someone. They have to be stable, which means they have a history of not moving around much from job to job, so I can count on them staying with us for long enough to offset their training costs. They have to have the ability to do the work, and they have to demonstrate the willingness to do the work by coming here on time every day and getting it done. If I find out from another employer or a reference that they are lacking any of these things, I'll probably give a criminal a better chance.

Of course I believe you are telling the entire story. That is a big con that has been going around for a while. These sleazy people send someone money and overpay the amount using a fraudulent check. There was even something on TV abut this. If the judge deemed this a misunderstanding then your record should be clear. You probably do not even have a criminal record if you were not convicted of this. I am sorry you were taken advantage of in this manner.

Your friend is correct. I know of someone that had a DUI and bad work history like he didn't work much at all. An employer will search both areas but it seems that the work history is always questioned.

Having a bad criminal record. If you have killed someone, you will never bring that person back to life. But if you have been lazy you can decide to start working hard and change.

You late to work, then your a liability, period.

But to compare to a criminal record, geez, where do you get your information? Criminal is just that, criminal. No one wants to hire anyone with that type of record. Get real.
