Velcro was invented by a Frenchman (not NASA!) who took his dog for a walk in the country and noticed that he had cockleburrs sticking to his wool trousers. He could not pull the hooked ends of the burrs out easily and had to slice them off. (Similar to sandspurs found in Florida.)

He experimented with plastics until he could make two different kinds of plastic fibers, one of which curled up in wool-like curls, and the other of which folded over in burr-like hooks. He could press the two together and they could be pulled apart and re-used.

He named it Velcro from the words velvet (or velour) and crochet. NASA popularized it, but they did not invent it.

I have a few pieces here and there.
