clogged? you should replace it every 4 weeks or so. if its clogged it wont' work.

is it the filter itself or the mechanism? sometimes they get clogged. You can dismantle it and clean it out but DO NOT USE SOAP unless you rinse very well. Try taking the mechanism to your local pet shop. Sometimes they're really nice and check it out for you so you don't have to buy a new one. Always remember to change your filters often.

the filter might need to get cleaned or the cord is not pluged in my filter ran dry so put more water in it

Does it run earlier you reassemble it? if so it would want to be something catching on it (not particular how in spite of the reality that!) Or have you ever tried replacing the fuse interior the plug and if its not a sealed plug, verify the wiring in it. After that i have no theory.
