when it is a pair of knickers ( a question on behalf of my sister)

I think I understand the question. Correct me if I'm wrong but you don't understand why its a bra or a brassiere [singular] and a pair of knickers [plural]

Knickers have only one part, they contain a single pelvis. A bra contains two breasts and a trunk.

You make a good point, if not very clear.

I'm afraid I don't have a definitive answer except to say that languages don't develop entirely logically.

I don't know. Why are there a field of cow's' and a field of sheep no - 's'?
Knickers ends in S so has to represent a duo or more. So this leads us to ask - what came first, - the S at the end or the word 'pair' at the beginning that made an S at the end compulsory? It's certainly a very tough one!

pair of knickers, are we in Englad or something? Knickers are aka granny panties. Brassiere is what a bra once was.

The word Brassiere is a French word, so to get a good definition look it up in a French / English dictionary.

knickers are underwear, like panties. "Bra" is short for brassiere, and that's what you wear to support your boobies. They are two very different things.

Originally leg ware like trousers were two pieces (one for each leg) and even though nowadays we have one piece leg ware we still use this grammatical anachronism and call them pairs. This also applies to underwear.
