I played the clarinet. It was pretty easy to learn, and if you live in an apartment, it's much quieter than a saxophone(<---noisy!). Tough decision. If I had to choose between the two right now...I think I'd actually rather play the saxophone. Best of luck to you!!! Lord Bless...

That can be a difficult choice. Many teachers recommend starting on clarinet first because it sets up alot of the basics that you need to play the saxophone. However, you don't always have to. I'm a saxophone student in college and I never played clarinet before saxophone. Once I started playing alot of gigs, I wished I had learned clarinet and decided to pick it up and teach myself, so it's really your decision. The second register of the clarinet has the exact same fingerings as the saxophone, which is one of the reasons why alot of saxophone kids start on clarinet. I would try both horns and see which you find easiest and most fun to play. Music is all about enjoyment and you want to be playing an instrument that you enjoy as well. Good luck with the decision!

Saxophone - you can do so much more with it - include learn very easily how to play the clarinet. The only difference you might run into is what clef you're playing in. Saxophone music is often in bass clef - clarinet not - so you'd have to learn how to switch back and forth - no big deal.
A sax is more appealing to others as well. A clarinet is so pedestrian. Think jazz band, swing band, need for some in the school musicals and marching bands, etc.
I started on a clarinet - and wound up playing alto clarinet, bass clarinet, bassoon and oboe. I can get by on the sax and even several brass instruments. It's all in knowing what keys for which notes.
Either way - congratulations! If they're even giving you the choice of the sax - you must be better than others. Always go for the rarest one. You can always go back to what you had been doing. Also remember that there are several saxes - soprano -the one that looks like a clarinet that Kenny G. plays, alto - the one they're probably going to start you out on, tenor and bass (and contrabass - not often found in middle school bands).
The tenor is my favorite - it's deeper and the most mellow. The soprano - unless you're Kenny G. - squeaks and the lower two kind of burp too much.
Enjoy it - it can take you around the world - it did for me!!

if you play the tenor sax, the clarinet fingerings are almost exactly the same. I played both in high school. All of the best saxophone players started out on the clarinet tho. That is the reccomendation most music teachers give.

Saxophone is hard to learn. Clarinet is easy. Saxophone can be easily heard if you screw up a note. Clarinets play in unison so you'd have to learn how to be part of the group. Saxophone is liked highly by everyone. Clarinet is. . . okay.
Okay I gave you the facts now you have to choose.

ok. So I had a similar concern as you approximately 5 years in the past, yet i desperate to play French horn. besides, I nevertheless can help you via fact i replaced into in band 3 years. the two the flute and the clarinet are wind instruments. the main effective distinction is which you will would desire to purchase reeds for the clarinet..and many them once you first initiate. i in my opinion can no longer inform you which ones one is far less complicated, via fact i've got had no very own adventure, yet in my class there have been so plenty greater clarinet gamers than flute gamers interior the long-term so possibly you may evaluate determining on the single the place there is far less those with the tool so as which you have gotten bigger aspects once you carry out. And do you like the candy, severe sound of the flute greater clever than the deeper between the clarinet? pay attention to diverse sounds and decide which one you like greater clever. sturdy luck!!!

I'd say go with the saxophone.

Clarinets tend to be more of a girly instrument, and saxophones are really more versatile anyways.

If you play the alto sax the notes are the same as the flute so you will basically learn 2 for the price of one....
