Congratulations on being one of the very few people ever to give serious thought to the hell-hello similarity. But trust me, I'm pretty sure the vast majority of people mean no ill will when they greet you with a hello.

Wasn't this in one of the Batman movies? Someone (Catwoman?) has a "Hello There" neon sign in her apartment. After she has a hissy-fit, the two middle letters short out, leaving "Hell here".

Elsewhere on the Internet, I came across a related quote: "Better an insincere 'Good morning' than a sincere 'Go to hell'."

As for your question regarding whether humanity is based on evil, I would say definitely not. If we were, we would've destroyed ourselves long ago. Humans can be pretty stupid and irrational, but our default position is on the side of being good, not evil.

Actually, with words like this you need to look at it's roots, it's history and how the word came about.

The word hello has nothing to do with hell. It's an alteration of hallo and an alteration of the obsolete word holla, meaning "stop".

And all of humanity doesn't use this word. There are a myriad of greetings in the world and interestingly enough, most of them can be translated to mean "good day".

I've made many typos concerning this. Hell is such a lovely greeting.
This also reminds me of "Ms Susie went to Hell - o operator give me number 9."

I always thought Hello was like Hallo. Which is a greeting in other languages.
