I just read about a woman who was killed by an ex who was stalking her. She knew it, her friends knew it and the police knew it. He still got her. Busted down the kitched door and killed her. I'm always a little baffled and alot horrified by these strories. Did she have loaded firearms in the house and access to them and the knowledge and commitment to use them? I don't think that I could kill an animal needlessly but I could definately defend myself if I needed to. I'm not wild about gun training and it's boring but I go out with my husband several times a year to make sure that I know how to safely handle one in an emergency. Why are people so afraid of guns and why would they vote away there rights to bear firearms?

First, let me say that I own 2 firearms (a handgun and a shotgun) I hunt with my father and brothers in the fall and I practice at a shooting range with the handgun regularly. I know how to strip down and clean both of them. I am a member of the NRA and no stranger to guns. (Interestingly, I am also a Democrat and while I do believe that there should be limits on certain types of guns and ammunition, I don't agree with voting away an individual's right to bear arms RESPONSIBLY)

That said, it is a fact that, overall, men are physically stronger then women. A gun can be taken away from you. (So, for that matter, can a knife, a can of mace, a baseball bat, etc) Another consideration is that most people, male or female, are not going to go into a situation like that with guns blazing. Most of us will attempt to threaten with the gun first. (Wrong, I know. But the fact is, most of us are not prepared to take the life of another person at a moments notice. Even if we think that person may harm us.) The best home protection a single woman can have? A great big well trained dog. I can sleep fine at night if my guns are not in the house, but I can't sleep at all if the dog isn't there. Trust me on this. If you come busting through my kitchen door with murder in mind, you have a better chance of getting out alive if I meet you with a gun then if the dog meets you.

It's a good question. Most women don't think about owning a firearm because they believe they can rationalize their way out of situations. What needs to be realized is not all situations can be rationalized. An ex that is stocking his ex-wife is told by police, friends, neighbors and family to stay away. Yet some still come by the house. He is not rational. I applaud you for going out with your husband and seeing past a stigma the media and women in general have against firearms. You are learning about something and knowing firearms do not have to be feared. People would vote away their rights to bear arms because they do not have a need for this law. I do not have a need for country music or loud motorcycles, so under their reasoning I should try to get rid of them. If I saved their life with my firearm they would change their mind, but it is sad it would take something so drastic. Guns are just a tool. They are neither inherently evil nor good. It is up to the controller what their use is for. There will be guns used for bad purposes no matter what, but with the legalization of concealed carry laws, many more guns are being put to a good use called deterring crime. Guns will always be around and people will always one them no matter what the nay sayers have to say.

You don't need a gun to defend yourself, just the right frame of mind and the training.
When you are attacked, you might freeze, in which case a gun is no more good to you than a white flag. If on the otherhand you get the motivation to fight, do you really know what your shooting at or what the whole story is. What if you killed someone who really just wanted to help. It's a subjective issue but plenty of cops have killed the wrong person in a heated situation and couldn't deal with it.

The girl who was killed by her stalking ex would have been better off with some well chosen company than a gun.

I owned a gun for 10 years and it took me 10 years before I used it. If I hadn't had my gun my son and I would be dead right now. I haven't used a gun since, but will if needed and only if needed for protection of me and my family.

monkey - Get real, guns are not designed to JUST KILL for the mere sake of killing. It is a means of protection for those of us that have been beaten and almost killed by the HANDS of another. Why not cut off everyones hands since it is their hands that hold the guns, not the guns firing themselves.

In the society I live in, guns are totally unseen and something I only hear about in the news. I've only held one once in my life and it filled me with a sense of dread and couldn't wait to hand it over to the bearer. I really don't believe that firearms should belong in the hands of humans at all - we are way too emotional a species to be in control of such terrifying lethal devices.
The motives still don't matter, if they were removed and banned form society full stop, the problem you list would not exist to such an extent. I agree though, the police really should take stronger steps. Woman (or indeed anybody else) should never have to resort to firearms.

I live in the UK. We are not aloud to own sidearms, but we can still shoot rifles and shotguns. My wife and our kids, a girl and boy are all competent shooters. One of the down sides to living in the UK is that, if you even poked someone with a stick who was breaking in to your house. You could find yourself in court charged with assault.

because its illegal here in the UK and guns arent so readily available like they are in the US. That aside id happily take gun training to be able to defend myself. it would make me feel a lot safer and sleep sounder.
