a 5th grader does not nbeed a cell phone. You can't use it during school hours and there are still plenty of pay phones which he/she could use to get in touch with a parent after school. Always carry a quarter for the phone instead. Better yet, provide the 5th grader with a bell calling card instead.

Ok I just bought my 5th grader a pre paid cell from Wal-Mart for $50. she can not take it to school and she has to earn the money for her pre-pay cards. So far so good. She understands the value of a buck so she is very careful with her minutes.

Oh my goodness, I didn't even get my first cell until I was 15!
But you should really try one of those "firefly" phones, from cingular I believe. They let you program like 5 numbers in them, and it's just a one time fee, I hear a lot of good things about them from fellow co-workers.
If not that, I would reccommend just a pre-paid phone- no contract, and just add minutes when needed.

Ditto, a cell phone should come on the scene around middle school beginning of high school...but if you need to keep in touch a pager or pre-paid cell phone is the best way to go.
