We don't know much about the banks in that area, and really need to find a the most hassle free bank as possible. I'm looking for suggestions on what bank to choose.

Leave your money where it is. Go to Phoenix and get settled in. Part of settling in is opening a bank account. Shop for a good bank. There are lots of them and they all have different features. When you find one you like, open an account using a check from your old bank. You need to talk with your new bank folks and ask many questions about when your funds are available to you as there needs to be time for checks to cancel and such. Also, make sure you have stopped automatic payments and deposits on the old account (this can get tricky depending on your situation as you don't want to leave unpaid bills and the deposits may be needed to cover some uncleared checks. So do your math real good here.).
When you open the new account do not close your old account right away. Some checks and other transaction may need to complete first and this will save the expense of bouncy checks. After you are sure all transactions are complete, write a check for the balance of the account and deposit that check into your new account and the process is complete.

I use Compass Bank. Free checking, no ATM fees and okay service. New branches go up in many places.
My former bank with convenient branches all over the Western US, Wells Fargo, gouges on fees. $5 for foreign ATM withdrawals, 1% on bill pay if not enough days ahead, etc.
Other banks are M&I, Bank One, Bank of AZ, Northern Trust, US Bank, Washington Mutual, many others and also many credit unions.

I moved to PHX 4 years ago and my bank didnt have any branches here either. We closed our old account after we found a bank we liked here and had a cashiers check sent to us. It was kind of a pain but at least we didn't have to carry large amounts of cash... these days with internet banking it's alot easier.
I strongly recommend staying away from Bank of America (very interesting that it is BOA for short, and they act like a BOA). They suck when it comes to fees. The 2 best banks in this area are Compass Bank and Washington Mutual (WaMu). Both of them pay back ATM fees and are everywhere here.

We bank with Desert Schools Credit Union and I really like them. Our checking is free, we can use all ATMs (though some other banks charge if I use theirs), they have a better rate on the savings and I really like their customer service. There are several credit unions in AZ and I suggest that over a bank any day. Credit Unions are non-profit so you don't get jacked with so many nickel and dime charges.
Their web site is www.desertschools.com. If you like them, you could probably arrange a wire transfer from your old bank to your new bank so you don't have to carry tons of cash.

Forget banks, try a credit union. Lower fees, better service. If you are moving for work, your employer may belong, or there are several "residential" credit unions, you just have to reside in the state or county.
As others have said, don't close out your old account and don't bring a lot of cash. If you need to put a deposit on a home, arrange a wire transfer of some sort.

My wife and I have a free checking account at a local bank. In my opinion, they are pretty much all the same. Our paychecks are direct deposited there. Then, we have an online savings account at ING Direct. It pays a much better interest rate then any of our local banks.
You can then transfer what you need back and forth (free) from your home PC.
Definately worth looking into.

Bank of America is known, Wells Fargo is big out here, Personally I use USAA (military bank) and they work everywhere. Anyone can get a Checking or Savings acct. through them, just not insurance unless your a veteran.

I am from Arizona and I used Bank of America. They are just about everywhere. I now use USAA Federal Savings bank.
