There is nothing official about being "retired". There is no rule that says once you've retired, you cannot come back. Once you've settled everything contract-wise with your former team (assumably, he has), your official status is, "Free agent."

He retired from the Dolphins, yeah, sounded better than saying he was cut. But injuries have hit the New England Patriots, and apparently they are interested in offering him a job ... so he may unretire.

He "retired" because the Dolphins were letting him go, and nothing seemed on the horizon for another team picking him up. But days later, the Patriots came calling. Theirs was an offer he was free to take if he wanted to.

the dolphins cut him from the team this year so he figured he'd retire. turns out the patriots need help at linebacker and offered him a job. theres no rule on staying retired you can play as long as you want and come out of retirement if you choose to do so.

Apparently he was cut..retired is sometimes a polite way of letting go of a legend
