It keeps your Ipod upright when you plug it in and keep you from plugging in your USB just sliding your Ipod into the dock. Also it has a dedicated high quality out. The new universal dock has some remote features that work with it.

An iPod dock is a device that hold the iPod up while it charges. It may also have speakers to play music. Depending on what kind of dock it is.

It's a remote station you can plug your pod into to charge it (ie a console that sits on your desktop). I guess it just saves you leaving your ipod loose around your desk.
