This is a home remedy that my husband's doctor gave him years that I've found very effective for the kind of irritating cough that keeps you awake. Brew a cup of Red Zinger tea (other teas will do, but nothing with caffeine, and preferably something citrusy). Stir in a good 2 tablespoons honey, or more to taste, and 2-3 tablespoons lemon juice. If it's bedtime--and this is when I generally use it--you might add 1 to 2 tablespoons brandy, but this is optional. I'm sure the honey has a throat-coating effect, but for whatever reason, it seems to really shut down a cough (so you can rest) better than anything that I've found in the store.

Hope you feel better soon.
