It can be amuck or amok, either way.
In a frenzy to do violence or kill: rioters running amuck in the streets.
In or into a jumbled or confused state: The plans went amuck.
In or into a uncontrolled state or a state of extreme activity: “This jam-packed area of Honolulu has come to stand for tourist development run amok” (Ila Stanger).

You have never "run a mok?"

Down here in the south, we have Mok-hounds we use to run them up a tree. Then we shot them out of the tree. Moks are good eating!

thats MUCK for starters.

Basically the term came from getting stuck in a type of mud that is called muck.Running a muck means getting into a tough position to get out of. I can't remember all the details but thats what it basically means.
