Smeagal was his given name when he was a hobbit. After he killed his brother to get the ring, he moved to a dark cave under a mountain and became Gollum.
Now, he has a split personality and has conversations with himself.

Smeagol is also known as Gollum. After killing Deagol because of the one ring and being driven out of his family, he developed a split personality because of his isolation and the effects of the one ring, Gollum was the horrible swallowing sound he made while talking thus to himself and so it became his name.....
