I just moved here for college. I don't know if I should take this job because I probably won't get to go home for Thanksgiving and definitely not all of Christmas break (maybe just a week out of the 3-week break). The other bad things are that some of the shifts start at 6:45 am, and some days I'll have 3pm-11pm shifts after going to school 11am-2pm. But other than that... it's a good job, part time, $8.50/hr... My ideal job would be to work on campus but I don't know if it's hard to get an on campus job or not. If I said no to this job it would be a big gamble. I'd really appreciate advice! Thank you :)

In my experience students are usually happier if they are working in a job that brings them into contact with other people their age. This job is not likely to do that. If there are no other options in this town, you may have to consider it, but you don't sound as if you rally want it. Why not ask them if you can try it for a couple of weeks and see how it goes? Tell them that because of your studies you may not be able to commit to the hours they need. Better to be up front with them .... they may be in a position to give you a reference later.

Best of luck.

It seems to me you are talking yourself out of this job offer. I think not going home for Thanksgiving and part of Christmas breaks is a definite negative considering the pay that you are being offered and the hours. Look elsewhere.

I am sure you can find a job on campus. In college, I had very little work experience and I got a two jobs working for the computer store for two summers and also a marketing assistant job during springtime. The great part of working on campus is that the people know you have school, so they are a lot more flexible. The only drawback is that the pay may be a little lower. But, they tend to post campus jobs all around..so there should be something you can find that you like.

Also, try workstudy as well, I heard they can get paid pretty well. I knew someone who worked in admissions and the pay was in double digits per hour.

Good luck. Btw, if you need other advice feel free to msg me about it.

When they offered you the job and before excepting it discuss the things that concern you. Can you compromise Thanksgiving or Christmas e.g. work one and not the other. Also will they be flexible with your school hours? You might offer them your hours are availablity first and see if it can work out! I would let them know that you would love the opportunity to work for them but want to make sure your availabilty isn't an issue. See if they will compromise with you schedule, if they won't keep looking. Best of luck to you!

Monster , Yahoo Hotjobs, Careerbuilder are some of the largest job boards, where you can apply for jobs and upload your resume. Since Craigslist, allows free job postings, many smaller companies post their vacancies on this online classifieds website. You can also search for jobs from multiple websites using aggregators like SimplyHired and Indeed. Referrals are also becoming a increasingly popular way to get hired.
