I ran a virus and spyware scan and came up clean. There's not a great many programs loaded. But the internet is slow to respond, and Y!Answers almost stands still.

It may not even be you,...

Your connection, is it cable DSL or other,... There could be work going on service to the lines, that the company has to re-route your service, to keep your account active. It could be the server for your neck of the woods is running at capacity, too many kids on line getting into trouble no doubt.

Maybe you're getting an update from the company that wrote the programs your software,... I hate it when I get updates for my anit-virus, when I'm in the middle of something important - my PC just draggs its butt, really bad.

Best thing to do is close down, shut it off and go for a walk or go to the store for some munchies. When you get back, just start it up and you ought to be good to go. relax.

Is the computer slow when not using the internet, if so try
start->run-> type "msconfig"
click startup and dselect all the programs at startup that you dont need.

If its slow on the internet, maybe you have too many extensions running on the browser or you do have some spy ware running in the back, try running "ad aware" ( download at download.com)

Y! Answers appears to be lagging right now on multiple computers, people say. I'm getting slowed myself.

However, check PandaSoftware online, and run the online virus scan, just in case.

Try going to your web browser(i.e Internet Explorer), click on Tools/Internet Options/Settings. Set your amount of disk space to use to between 100-200, I have mine set on 200 w/an AMD Athlon 64 PC. You can get more tech info at pcpitstop.com (a tech friend recommended it to me). There you can run a free pc scan to find out (safely) more about your pc & what you can do to speed it up. Hope this helps you. :)

Is it only internet related things that go slowly? Then it's most likely your ethernet. If you are on wireless, someone else might be using your wireless access, so secure that. If it's not and you have a children, they may be downloading songs from the internet, causing a slowdown for everyone.

I purchased Norton and found that my computer has slowed down drastically.

Friends told me that Norton is known for that. . Is that the one you're using? I'm not that familiar with antivirus software but I'm sure others can recommend an alternate one. Is AVG one?

Sometimes this happens when you do some upgrades improperly. It can happen if you install too many programs or a program that uses too many resources. There a lot of other possible reasons
