What kind of Grass???

For a lawn, you simply scratch the surface of the ground with a metal rake, to loosen some soil. Spread the sead, I use a whirleybird, there are other spreaders, you can use your hand (not very even).

Then you have to ensure that it gets water every morning, and 1 hour or so before sunset for the next 14 days. This is important. Once the seeds crack open, they need to be kept moist, to stop them from drying out.

If you meant the other type of Grass (pot, mary jane, etc.) I am not going to tell you.

When I read your question, I had to smile. It seems so simple. NOT. Last Spring, I, too, was going to plant grass. Went to the hardware and picked some out. When I got to the check-out, the manager came over to me and asked, 'Do you know what you have there?'. Duh. I have grass seed. in my best Forest Gump impression. Would you believe, I had annual grass seed that only comes up one year. After that, the weeds take over again. So, you need perennial grass seed. I never even knew they made such a thing. But it spreads and comes up for eternity.

To prepare the ground, you should rake down a little bit so the shoots have something to grab on to. Sprinkle liberally on the ground, and water every day. Just like growing flowers. Oh, I left out the best part. Then you say 10 Hail Marys and 10 Our Fathers. :)

It's best to follow the manufacturer's directions.
Different type seeds might need more water or a deeper depth. Sew it in loosely tilled soil and
use a rake to get it into the dirt. Keep it moist.

I heard of someone who just wanted to plant a small section and he dug up the dirt and mixed the seed in a bag with the dirt and leveled it back into the area. He kept it watered and it turned out ok. Might just be a stupid person's good luck though.

You scatter the seeds in the patch of lawn you want to seed, and water it every day, morning and night. You may also want to fertilize the area before seeding it to encourage new growth.

If your planting grass plant the grass in the fall. If you plant it in the summer it will die and don't worry frost won't kill the grass.
