I have an older Fourtrax 300 2-wheel drive ( just bought) and I can't get it into reverse. Cable is hooked up and moving the lever, but it will not engage. I don't have a manual and I'm leary about opening it up. Anybody have any ideas on what may be wrong and how to repair or adjust?

There should be a button on the left hand brake lever. You need to push down on the button with your left index finger, squeeze the brake lever and push the gear selector downward to apply reverse. I own a 1990 300 fourtrax. CAN'T KILL EM'

If I'm reading this right, your concern is not related to the SHIFTER not going into reverse, but that when you select reverse, the transmission will not engage????
If this is the case, you may have an internal problem with the tranny which will require that it be removed and opened up .
Another possibility, (not sure if it applies to Honda's) but I do know of some vehicles that lock out reverse on purpose so that when you are moving forward, and accidently selected reverse, it won't engage. This feature is designed to prevent the tranny from grenading if you accidently put the shifter in reverse when moving forward.........I can look in to it a little deeper when back in the shop on Monday..........
