Excellent points made earlier. By your reasoning, all mythological creatures are real. I shall start my letter to Santa shortly.
Seriously though. I wonder if we might turn your question around as follows:
What if God did not create us, but by believing we created God?

The 'god gene' is something that's being explored or investigated by scientists. A certain area in the temporal lobe of all our brains causes us to 'believe' in a religious presence. It's a survival mechanism we've developed over the eons.
They can prompt people to feel a 'religious presence' by stimulating certain areas of the temporal lobe. They've already known that high anxiety, stress, near starvation and other extreme emotional situations can trigger the 'god gene,' but there has not been enough investigations to pin down the exact cause. The new studies are intriguing however.

I think most of the people who have answered already have read your question wrong. Yes, God must exist in order for someone not to believe in Him, because without God he/she would not exist either and therefore would not be able to either believe or disbelieve. Just as our finger is part and parcel of the whole body and if the body dies our finger dies with it, our existence depends totally on the existence of the Lord. And this applies whether you consider us to be a spirit soul or just a body. The Lord's material energy, the universe, is the 'mother' of us all for birth and maintenance of our bodies.

i do not believe in god,but your question is reasonable.
i think a better way to look at the question is not to think of god as a thing but as an idea.
let me explain.for example,if u blindfold me and put a pen (symbolising god) on the table and tell me "there isnt any pen on the table" but i choose to believe there is,i have no evidence(im blindfolded).
now if someone read an article about our experience but did not know if the pen even existed they could choose 3 standpoints:
1)disbelief-an athestist
2)dont care-agnostist
3)belief-religious person
but now lets rewrite the story so the pen isnt there but u tell me it is.
wat about then?
the pen is really jus an idea.
now let me use another example.faries.do ppl believe in faries?no.do faries exist for them not to be believed in?no,they dont exist at all.even if someone believed faries existed or didnt, they wont come to life anyway.
see my point?

I think the statement is flawed! The proposition "Since i choose not to believe in God" cannot be an inference to "there still must be one". This is a logical fallacy, fallacy of assumption i think (been a few years since logic class).
So the integral logic of the statement undermines it.
So i cannot agree that choosing not to believe in something must make it true.
Choosing not to eat cake makes the cake real in the face of the actual choice we make but choosing not to believe in cake does not follow through that cake exists, in fact it follows through that it may not exist. The same is true of this.

so... does that mean that flying pigs must exist in order for me not to believe in flying pigs?.... I guess it depends what you mean by God, but still you must admit that your sense of logic is a tad obscure...

By your logic, the easter bunny and leprechauns must exist too, since I don't believe in them either.
