If you have fuel injection (almost all cars sold in America in the last 16 years now have fuel injection) your fuel pump may be cavitating because it ran dry when you ran out of gas.
You can try spraying starter fluid into the air cleaner intake to keep it running in the hopes that the fuel pump will start to pick up gasoline, but if that doesn't work, it may be time to have a competent mechanic get all the air out of the system.

The logical conclusion may be that water and other contaminants got pumped into your fuel filter when you ran out of gas. So since you may need to replace your fuel filter anyways, replace it now. It's probably located along the frame rail of the car. Trace the lines coming from the gas tank and you'll find the fuel filter. Also, get another 5 gallons of fresh gas to pour in the tank to make sure you've got a lot of good gas in the tank. The next step if a new fuel filter doesn't fix the problem is to attach a shop fuel pressure gage to the fuel rail schrader valve and make sure you have 35 to 40 psi fuel pressure (most cars). Your fuel pump may not have liked running out of gas and decided to take a vacation.

Yes, air in the fuel lines will surely do this. You can push the air out by cracking a fuel line close to the engine. But it could also be ignition. When it starts to stall, you can spray some starting fluid in the air filter housing. If it continues to run, then it will confirm a fuel problem. If it dies anyway, you probably have an ignition coil that's bad. Best of luck.

if you run out of gas air gets into the fuel line. make sure you put enough gas in, turn the ignition for a while and wait for the gas to go through the airline. it will take some time.

a lot of tit. turn the key and see if you can hear the fuel pump kick on on not. take the gas cap off and listen when someone turns the key on. if you dont hear it its burned up. if you have a newer car that is.or take the gas line off up front and see if you are getting gas pumped up to the front. if you have gas then spark is the next thing id look at
