I was never grounded or given extra chores, but I was spanked and feel like it increased the violence in me.

When I read this question first I was totally thinking about another kind of punishment. Oops.
When I was a child, being a daughter of a Baptist preacher, I never got punished until I was a teenager. My parents said I was a good little kid but everything fell apart during my teen years. I always got grounded off of the phone and had my music took away (my parents said the music i listened to was the devil i was into things like Marilyn Manson, Guns N Roses, and 2pac). I really didn't care because I was always the child that withdrew from human activity. If I had extra chores my parents knew I wouldn't do them, if I was spanked I aways responded by saying it was child abuse.
But the punishment that worked with me was when my parents threatened to send me to a Christian all girls school or a Christian Home for out of control children because I knew that my parents would treaten it but I wasn't gonna overdo it because if I did I knew they would have potential to actually do it one day.

Never got spanked, so that's out....
The punishment I got didn't really work (being grounded) because I would be at it again, giving them all my teenage angst.
Extra chores were a given just to earn privileges (movie at the mall with friends, staying over someone's house, etc).

I used to get all three. The spankings hurt like hell, but then add
to it the grounding, and some extra work to boot was really bad. It only happened a couple of times, and I learned.
I have since gotten married, and my family brought that up to my wife during a conversation about our youth. My wife now employs the same tactics

When I was growing up I never really got punished, My parents always gave me options and let me have a choice, I knew my limits and theirs too.. Today with my 4 kids I rarely ever spank, but I do add chores and take away privileges if I need to.
