In high school, I once had this same problem on a test. I did not know the answer. What I did was try to find a pattern if you have less books.

If you have 1 book = 1
If you have 2 books=2
If you have 3 books, if the book shelf has 2 books, there are 3 places to place the 3rd book.
so the possible arrangements becomes (number of previous possible arrangements)*(3)
=2*3 =6

If you have 4 books, there are 4 possible places to place the 4th book. So the possible arrangements becomes 6*4 =24

I realized 1,2,6,24 was the sequence for factorials.

When you place the n-th book on a shelf that contains (n-1) books there are only n possible places to place the n-th book.

So the answer is 1*2*3*....*n which is n!

So the answer to your problem is 8! =40320 (or choice D)

Simply take 8! (eight factorial) which is equals to 40,320. Therefore, I'm sure that D is the right answer...

E. None of the above. If you take into consideration different stacking techniques, the angles and positions the books can be set in, the size of the shelf, etc., then the answer is an infinite amount of ways.

We have to include some considerations:
1)Supposing that there are only a way to set each book and the books are all different... the answer is 8!=20,160
2)Supposing that there are only a way to set each book and the books are all the same... the answer is 1
3)Supposing that there are different ways to set each book in the shelf... the answer is infinity.

i anticipate you're no longer pondering the version between putting them facet via facet and piling them on precise of one yet another! Statistically, the respond is the type of diversifications of 8 issues taken 8 at a time P(8,8) = 8! / 0! = 8! it ought to help to think of of it this way. enable N= type of techniques. For the 1st e book, N=a million - there is in basic terms one place to place it. e book 2, N=2 b/c you could placed it to the left or real of e book a million. So for 2 books, there are 1x2 techniques. There are 3 places to place e book 3, so the working entire is 1x2x3 i think of you need to be waiting to work out the place this is going...
