There are a lot of things that cause pimples.
Some things are internal, some external.
External factors are
Dirt: This clogs the pores, which causes the body to react by giving of antibodies to attack the germs. These pimples start of red and gradualy develop a white centre.
You can also spread more germs into you're pores by squeezing pimples, so never do.
It can be prevented simply by cleaning your face with a facial cleaning wash or gel.
Stress: This is external, but causes internal problems. Usually it lowers the immune system, so your body cant fight the germs on your skin enough, causing the spots. Simply try to stress less.
Diet: Also external, but causes internal problems. Despite popular believe, chocolates, sweets and fatty foods do not cause spots. But sugar and caffiene can lead to stress which does.
The misconception comes because women get more cravings for junk food during their periods, when their also more likely to get pimples, so people falsely link them.
Next internal. These are more difficult to control or cure.
Hormones: During our teen years, and sometimes even in our adult years an inbalance of hormones causes pimples. It's caused when there is to much testosterone (the male hormone) in the body. Women have it as well, and a doctor will often prescribe the contraceptive pill to help cure it.
Hormones also cause the body to give of more sebum (natural body oils) which clog in the pores. Germs love these oils and atack the pores causing infection. Washing will solve the problem temporaryly, but medicines cur it in the long run.
Internal infections, or inability for the skin to protect itself: Sometimes the skin has trouble protecting itself from germs etc. And people are prescribed antibiotics or often Ro-Accutan (a medicine containing pure Vit-A) to help clear the problem up.
This occurs, when all external products (face washes and creams fail to work) this is a last resort, and is ussually the most effective.
I hope this helps, and gives you a clearer understanding.

Here is an article from a website I came across. I think it answers your question perfectly.
The cause of pimples is unknown. The process by which a pimple develops is highly intricate. While we do know that a pore collapses on itself and blocks sebum (oil) from escaping, we do not fully understand why this process takes place in one sebaceous gland versus another.
Causes of adult acne and teen acne may include hormones, diet, evolutionary biology, vitamin deficiency, stress, and more. The real explanation may be a complex mix of many of these factors.
Hope this helps you!

Dirt gets into the pores of your skin.
The natural oil and water that are in your skin cannot escape as you prespire because it is too oily.
Therefore the pimple forms because of a build up of oil under the skin.
If you dont do a good job at cleaning your face, acne forms because the oil has sat under the skin too long and turned to acid and begins to eat away at your skin.
This is what causes acne scars.

Well for one stress!! And eating stuff high in sugar and greasy foods. try cutting back on your sugar intake as much as possible. Eat tons of fruit, blue berries is great for your skin! And drinking 11 glasses of water a day. Dehydration is very bad for your skin and will make your skin look dull and will make pimples come! Also, which is very important, make sure you are getting plenty of rest! Atleastt 71/2 hours if sleep a day and try to sleep on your back. Hope this helps:)
