Let me prefix this response by letting you know that I am an immigration paralegal, so I am certainly am not the end all of immigration, but consider myself well informed. It will not necessarily help you in obtaining a green card, however, a U.S. degree would probably provide you the best avenue to a job in the U.S. and a U.S. work visa which will allow you to eventually apply for a green card through your employer. One further caveat, some visas status' do not allow you to apply for a green card such an TN's (for Canadian's).

Its not a green card but a student visa card. It gives you the privilege to stay in the u.s while you are studying.
There are several types of visa that will give you a legal way to stay.
It all depends on who petitioned you. If a school petitioned you, you get a student visa. If a company where you work.. you get a working visa. If family, government, social service. blah blah blah.. its a green card.
All of them has expiration except the green card, which the temporary one needs to get renewed within 2 years. After renewing the 1st green card. The 2nd one will be permanent.
The student and working visa is a temporary visa. You have to leave the u.s if you get fired or you graduated from school.
Well, thats how I understand this things..
