It's a good hobby for adults!
I agree with those above who have recognized that LEGO toys are primarily designed for children. However, LEGO can be played with and enjoyed by anyone at virtually any age. LEGO makes DUPLO and QUATRO for especially young children. But the larger models (e.g. Star Wars Death Star II, Imperial Star Destroyer), the RC train sets, and the Mindstorms and Technic models are not intended for young children.
Anyone who suggests that only children should play with LEGO toys is ignorant or stupid. Most children cannot afford to buy the Ultimate Collector's Series LEGO toys. These sets in particular have been created for adults as much as children--and only those children who receive them as gifts (or are independently wealthy) are lucky enough to assemble and play with them. LEGO doesn't put an upper age limit on the purchase and play of its toys.
Finally, as someone else suggested, who cares whether someone deems LEGO a children's toy or not! If you want to buy and build LEGO toys well into adulthood, then by all means do so. As a productive adult with a steady job and an independent face painting business, a regular volunteer for the Children's Museum of Denver and the Denver Public Library, a taxpayer and, most important, a citizen of the United States who still buys and builds LEGO toys, I would tell any person that looks down upon my hobby to...well, you can imagine what I would tell them to do. I dare say these same people, who look down upon adults who play with LEGO toys, couldn't build them if they tried because they lack the mental capacity to do so. Besides, they're probably too busy working at McDonald's anyway. :P

I'd say it's a good hobby for adults, especially if you're creative and often think in three dimensions. Some of the Lego models I've seen have been amazing, and they certainly weren't built by kids. :) Moreover, the toy designers who come up with new models are also adults. Granted, that's their job, rather than their hobby, but I'd wager that a lot of them still tinker with Legos or other building sets in their spare time.
I, for one, LOVE Legos! I'd make them my hobby if I had more time. :) And I'm 31! And female!
Besides, what you do as a hobby shouldn't depend on what other people think about it, right? As long as it makes you happy, I say go for it! :)

Both. It's considered a children's toy, but who cares? You can get as much out of it as a kid can. Just like children write stories, adults can be professional authors. Besides, try telling one of the Lego Master Builders that it's just a children's toy.
