There are 3 books all by Dave Pelzer.
He is an author and advocate for children's rights. As a kid he was physically and verbally abused by his mom for about eight years. It started when he was about 5 and became very severe by the time he was 8. His story constitutes one of the three worst cases of child abuse in California history. His drunk mom stabbed him, held his arm over a lit stove, attempted to strangle him, starved him, beat him, and forced him to eat his baby brother's feces. When he was 12 his teachers and principal finally called the police, he was rescued after al those years of abuse. He was sent to a foster home where he gradually overcame the abuse he had known all of his young life.
He chronicles his abuse, escape and life after abuse in 3 books:
A Child Called It
The Lost Boy
A Man Named Dave
An amazing heart wrenching story made all the more inspiring by how he overcame his abuse. i highly recommend the books.

The Egoist by George Meredith, It has its faults as Meredith was an awful snob, overweighting his prose with classical references, but on the other hand, how many authors can write wittily for two pages on the subject of a leg?
His sharp observation of the male character is still relevant. Sadly, none of his other work came near the same standard and he is largely forgotten despite once being very popular.

"East of Eden" by John Steinbeck. The book is such an amazing mix of realism, autobiography, symbolism and liberal philosophy, and yet it all works out somehow. It does not so much teach us something as it is a very peculiar expression of a man´s soul...it´s amazing but rather difficult to explain, so just read it!
