Because Texas is the only state that has ever been a republic. The flag had one star to rival that of the United States. After annexation, the flag stayed the same. Thus, Texas is the "Lone Star State." Best state too in my opinion.

The State flag has one large star on it. I think this is what once was the first flag of the new Country of Texas. Do you know that Texas is the only state in the Union that retained its ability to lawfully secede? They're prickly, those Texans...

2 of the answers are right. Texas was once its own nation before it joined the union. We retained our one star on our flag. We also are the only people that can state our nationality as Texans rather than American on passports. When we joined the union part of our agreement was that we could succeed from the usa at any time. We have retained our individuality while joining the greatest nation on earth. I believe that that makes us ONE of a kind.
